Maud’s Landing turtle nesting

The long beach at Maud’s Landing is a green and loggerhead turtle nesting site. Over the warm months females haul up the sand after dark to dig a nest and lay, and from around January the hatchlings emerge and scramble for the sea — entirely wild and dependent on patience and a little luck.

It is self-guided, so the turtle-watching code matters: no lights, move slowly, stay low, and keep well back so you don’t scare a nesting female off. A seasonal closure protects the nesting beaches north of the landing.
