Scenic flights

Lift off from the Coral Bay airstrip to see the whole reef from above — turquoise lagoons, ribbon coral, and the dark shapes of mantas and whales below.

From the ground the reef is dazzling but hard to grasp; from the air the picture snaps into focus — the white surf line of the outer reef, the lagoon shading from aqua to deep blue, and the wildlife. Fixed-wing flights leave straight from the Coral Bay airstrip, with pilots who double as marine spotters.

Options run from a short loop over the bay to longer flights along the coast. The real magic is the perspective on the animals — mantas, whale sharks, humpbacks, dugongs and turtles that are elusive from a boat are often easiest to appreciate from above.

When to go

Year-round; wildlife-spotting best aligned with the marine calendar (whale sharks Mar–Jul, humpbacks Jul–Oct).
