Skeleton Bay

A 20-minute beach walk north along Bill’s Bay reaches Skeleton Bay, where the shallows — often no more than ankle to knee deep — act as a nursery for juvenile reef sharks. Blacktip, whitetip and the odd lemon shark shelter here, with up to around 200 small sharks gathering between roughly October and March; they have been recorded here as far back as the 1920s.

It sits inside the no-take Maud Sanctuary Zone and the juveniles are easily spooked, so it is a watch-from-the-shallows experience — keep your distance, move slowly, and let them be.
