Humpback whale watching
Each winter around 40,000 humpbacks surge past Ningaloo — and Exmouth is one of the few places on Earth you can legally swim with them.
Between June and November one of the planet's great humpback migrations rolls along the Ningaloo Coast as whales travel between Antarctic feeding grounds and the warm calving waters of the north-west. The reef-sheltered water off Exmouth becomes a resting and nursing ground, and the whales are often visible breaching and tail-slapping right from the headlands.
What makes Ningaloo special is the in-water experience: its State waters and the Muiron Islands are currently the only place in WA where licensed operators can run swim-with-humpback tours. These are full-day boat trips where spotter planes find relaxed whales and small guided groups of snorkellers enter the water for the chance of an encounter.
Expect a wild experience, not a guaranteed one — guides only allow swims with calm, curious whales. Even when swims don't happen, the day usually delivers surface watching, whale song through a hydrophone, and bonus dolphins, mantas and turtles.
When to go
On the reef from June; the migration peaks July–September. Swim tours run roughly August–October from Exmouth.

How it works
- Shore-based (free): bring binoculars to elevated lookouts like Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, especially during the spring southern migration.
- Boat/tour (for swimming): a licensed full-day operator; spotter planes find calm whales and small groups enter the water in turns.
