SUP & kayaking
Glide over glassy lagoon flats and into a red-walled gorge — Ningaloo's sheltered waters are made for calm-morning paddling above living coral.
Ningaloo is one of the few places you can launch a kayak or SUP off the beach and be over fringing reef within minutes. Inside the lagoon the water is warm, clear and protected, and the best paddling is in the calm of early morning before the afternoon sea breeze fills in — a wonderful, low-impact way to explore alongside turtles, rays and reef fish.
Two experiences stand out. On the sheltered Gulf side, Bundegi has a dedicated sanctuary-zone kayak trail to snorkel moorings. On the west side, Yardie Creek is a permanent waterway running between towering red gorge walls — sheltered, scenic, and a chance to spot black-footed rock-wallabies on the ledges.
Conditions and tides shape every paddle: reef snorkel sites are best at high tide, and Turquoise Bay’s current means SUP/kayak there suits calm conditions and competent paddlers.
When to go
Year-round, but governed by calm conditions and early mornings (before the afternoon sea breeze). Cooler months (~April–October) bring lighter winds; reef-snorkel paddles are best on a high tide.

How it works
- Beginner-friendly in sheltered spots (Bundegi, Yardie Creek); reef-trail and Turquoise Bay paddles need more competence.
- Hire sit-on-top kayaks and SUPs (with PFDs) in town; guided sea-kayak/snorkel tours also run.
- Beyond 400 m offshore, WA law requires a worn lifejacket plus flares and a GPS distress beacon (EPIRB or PLB).
